Abstract in Portuguese
Este texto abordará brevemente (devido ao limite de palavras proposto) algumas das práticas empreendidas pelo Juízo de Menores do Distrito Federal durante a gestão de José Cândido de Albuquerque Mello Mattos (1924-1933), visando a proteção e a assistência da infância tida como abandonada ou delinqüente. Assunto em voga entre políticos e intelectuais desde fins do século XIX, a “questão da infância” ganhou novos e definitivos contornos no decorrer da Primeira República, num panorama marcado pelos debates higienistas e por teorias eugênicas, além de tentativas de ordenação e intervenção do espaço urbano através do enquadramento de grupos sociais considerados desviantes, no qual a criança era tida como um dos principais instrumentos que garantiriam o sucesso do projeto civilizatório elaborado por intelectuais e políticos.
Abstract
This text will briefly address (due to the proposed word limit) some of the practices undertaken by the Juvenile Court of the Federal District during the administration of José Cândido de Albuquerque Mello Mattos (1924-1933), aiming at the protection and assistance of the childhood regarded as abandoned or delinquent. Hot topic among politicians and intellectuals Since the end of the 19th century, the “childhood issue” has gained new and definitive contours in the during the First Republic, in a panorama marked by hygienist debates and eugenic theories, as well as attempts to organize and intervene in urban space through the framing of social groups considered deviant, in which the child was seen as a of the main instruments that would guarantee the success of the civilizing project elaborated by intellectuals and politicians.
