Abstract
The development of thought occurs through language. This thought is fundamental to personal and social development of the individual. It can be expressed internally and externally, and through the language it obtains the communicative function. The Brazilian Community of Deaf communicates through the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) which is, by definition, a visual-spatial language. This characterizes the Libras because of its linguistic nature, where the "signals" are the reality to which it refers and in which communication is articulated in space and visually understood. The Ministry of Education recognizes and regulates the Libras through the \201CLibras Act\201D but it has few scientific terms, which hinders the popularization of science, the understanding of scientific issues with the deaf students, and compromises their access to knowledge as citizens they are. In the field of Botany, the literature shows that Libras' dictionaries do not show signals for various aromatic herbs, no matter if they are used for medical, food or cosmetic purposes. Though, this study aimed to develop a glossary of aromatic herbs species in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), using the olfactory system as the main input in this development process. The methodology used was action research, and through it, workshops to prepare fresheners and fragrances and have a depth study of some plant species were created. Students involved in research have created signs in Libras for nine aromatic herbs (star anise, eucalyptus, vanilla, clove, ylang-ylang, lavender, citronella and cedar). Our results show that it is possible to create signals based on scientific concepts through workshops that used the olfactory system as a stimulus for the deaf students
